New Digital Technology to Replace Analogue Network and Bolster Response Efforts During Emergency Scenarios
Tait Communications, a global leading supplier of critical communications solutions, and its local partner Tecradio will deploy a nationwide DMR Tier 3 network for E-REDES, the largest distributor of electricity in Portugal.
The new digital mission-critical communications network will include 42 sites, 84 repeaters, and more than 600 terminals supporting and including voice and SCADA services.
Following the 2025 Iberian Peninsula blackout; Storm Kristin, an Atlantic cyclone that claimed 14 lives and left 1 million people without power in January 2026; and other severe weather events that have battered Portugal in recent years, E-REDES, an EDP group company, decided to replace its analogue network with DMR Tier 3 technology to ensure continuous mission-critical voice and data services, in particular, during emergencies.
“We are delighted to have been selected by EDP/E-REDES for this important radio communication project in Portugal,” said Andy Hatcher, Managing Director of Tait Europe, Middle East, and Africa. “This contract reflects the confidence that a leading energy company such as EDP/E-REDES places in Tait Communications and Tecradio for mission-critical communications. We look forward to working closely with EDP/E-REDES to deliver a robust and future-ready technology solution that supports its teams and critical operations.”
EDP is one of the biggest energy companies in Europe, serving nearly 9 million customers in regulated and liberalised markets. Between 2026 and 2028, EDP is investing to reinforce electrification and strengthen energy resilience.
“The selection of Tait as the manufacturer and Tecradio as the national integrator is justified by the combination of a robust, resilient, secure and scalable DMR Tier 3 solution, suited to the technical requirements of the private mobile communications network, with the implementation capabilities, experience and local support provided by the integrator,” said Hugo Miguel Pereira, E-REDES Head of Infrastructure, Platforms and Connectivity for Mission Critical Iberia Networks. “It also reflects Tait’s proven track record in delivering mission-critical communications solutions for utilities with operational and technological requirements similar to those of E-REDES. This infrastructure is a critical communications network supporting the electricity grid maintenance and operations teams; therefore, operational resilience, communications security, availability, and service continuity are mandatory requirements to ensure an effective response, including in the event of failures, emergencies or demanding operating conditions.”
