Why Use Multiband Radios?

The unpredictable nature of emergency situations has made real interoperability a critical goal in Public Safety communications for decades. In emergencies, the teams on the ground need to be able to communicate with each other to respond to evolving threats. Multiband radios are a key tool in creating real inter-agency cooperation.

On a good day, mobile officers with multiband radios can roam between networks and frequency bands, expanding their effective area of operation.

Tait client, Oklahoma Department of Public Safety patrols the state’s 111,994 miles of city, county and state-maintained roads and highways. Agencies responsible for jurisdictions of this enormous scale often need to roam between the various communication networks and frequencies available in their district. With multiband radios, mobile officers can stay seamlessly connected throughout their operational area.

On a bad day, first responders attending a serious incident involving multiple agencies – Fire Rescue, Ambulance, or Law Enforcement, and other support agencies – can use multiband radios to join an operational talk group and coordinate their efforts.

A major earthquake occurred 22 February 2011 in Tait headquarters’ city of Christchurch, New Zealand. This earthquake resulted in 185 deaths, more than 2,000 injuries throughout the city, and NZD$40Bn worth of damage and rebuild costs. This event truly tested the first responder capacity of the Christchurch and Greater Canterbury area. Support came from far and wide to assist with the rescue effort. Japan deployed 66 USAR (urban search and rescue) members to Christchurch within 2 days of the earthquake. Queensland, Australia also provided search and rescue operators to assist. This multi-agency effort combined assistance from other countries with New Zealand’s own Civil Defense group resulted in the best case scenario for search and rescue efforts. Multiple agency emergency response is a powerful tool, but can be chaotic without shared communication channels. Multiband radios can make these efforts safer and more efficient.
