How an Italian Oil & Gas
Operator Improved Safety
with Intrinsically Safe Radios

At a Glance

Sector: Oil & Gas

Environment: Hazardous (Class I, Zone 1; Class I, Div 2)

Solution: 100+ Tait TP9361 IS/TM9355 radios

Key outcomes: Improved safety, interoperability, GPS visibility, IS compliance

Operating in hazardous environments demands absolute reliability from every system that keeps people safe. In oil and gas production where flammable gases, vapors, and dust may be present, communications equipment must not only perform flawlessly, it must do so without introducing ignition risk.

To reinforce workforce safety and maintain operational continuity across multiple facilities, a leading Italian oil and gas operator partnered with Tait Communications and JESCOM Europe to modernize its radio fleet with certified Intrinsically Safe (IS) equipment.

The result: a seamlessly integrated communications solution that delivers greater confidence for workers and real‑time visibility for management.

The Challenge

Enhanced safety with minimal disruption

Operating a three site DMR Tier 2 simulcast system, the customer needed new portable and mobile radios that could deliver on strict IS requirements and integrate seamlessly without interrupting production. Any new equipment had to:

  • Support safe use in Class 1, Zone 1 environments (defined as an area in which an explosive gas atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation)
  • Meet Class 1, Division 2 certification (capable of preventing an explosion by limiting energy to non-ignition levels)
  • Integrate cleanly with the existing multi vendor DMR infrastructure
  • Work seamlessly with the organization’s third party dispatch platform
  • Provide GPS location tracking across all sites
  • Introduce as little operational downtime, training burden, or additional complexity as possible

Above all, the operator needed a solution that enhanced worker protection and ensured full safety compliance, without replacing the entire system.

The Solution

An interoperable, Intrinsically Safe radio fleet

Working closely with JESCOM Europe, Tait designed a tailored solution based on its TP9361 Intrinsically Safe portable radios and TM9355 mobile radios, engineered specifically for hazardous environments.

More than 100 IS-certified radios were deployed across the customer’s facilities delivering:

The TP9361 radios carry internationally recognized IS certifications, including IECEx, ATEX, and AEx, allowing safe operation in high risk hazardous zones. The radios also feature the industry standard blue IS casing, giving teams instant visual confirmation that they are using approved devices in restricted environments.

Built to withstand harsh conditions, the TP9361 is built Tait Tough, exceeding relevant MIL‑STD‑810G standards. It includes IP68 protection, shock absorbing construction, a water shedding speaker grille, and a recessed screen for added durability.

The Results

Increased confidence, visibility and overall safety

By taking a consultative approach, Tait and JESCOM Europe delivered a solution aligned to the customer’s specific operational needs, job roles, and safety obligations.

Workers now have greater confidence knowing their radios will perform reliably—whether during routine tasks or critical incidents with features such as:

  • Dedicated emergency controls

  • Man Down alerts that automatically notify dispatch if a worker is incapacitated

  • Location-based response, allowing help to be sent quickly and accurately

These capabilities have strengthened the operator’s ability to respond to emergencies, reduce incident impact, and maintain compliance with hazardous area safety standards.

In addition to enhanced safety for workers, the organization has also gained:

  • Improved situational visibility across all sites

  • More efficient coordination between field teams and dispatch

  • Reduced risk associated with equipment failure or communication loss

The future is open with Tait

The success of this deployment shows how standards-based solutions give organizations the flexibility to evolve their communications environment without locking themselves into a single vendor.

With a robust, interoperable Intrinsically Safe radio fleet now in place, the operator benefits from safer workflows, faster emergency response, and clearer, more reliable communication across hazardous environments.

The project demonstrates how Tait’s open standards approach and IS expertise support oil and gas facilities in meeting strict safety requirements, while maximizing the value of their existing infrastructure.

"Tait equipment was selected over alternative solutions thanks to its excellent price–performance ratio and its seamless interoperability with the existing on-site equipment and the Omnitronics dispatch and GPS localization solution also provided. "
